Three days aren't enough to see all of Portugal — but they are plenty to cover the essentials of the central region from Lisbon. This itinerary balances city, nature and history, at a comfortable pace and with no repetition. It's what we most recommend to first-time visitors.
Day 1 — Lisbon
Give the first day to the capital. In the morning, Belém: the Jerónimos Monastery, the Belém Tower and the obligatory warm custard tart. In the afternoon, the historic heart — the Pombaline Downtown, the Chiado, and the climb to Alfama and São Jorge Castle for sunset over the Tagus. In the evening, dinner with fado.
To avoid losing time between hills, our Lisbon tour links it all with a private driver.
Day 2 — Sintra, Cabo da Roca and Cascais
On the second day, leave the city for the enchanted hills of Sintra. Start early at the Pena Palace, colourful atop the range, then descend to the mysterious Quinta da Regaleira with its Initiation Well. At lunch, try a travesseiro in the town. In the afternoon, reach Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of Europe, and finish in Cascais by the sea.
Sintra in the morning, the ocean in the afternoon: in one day you go from the magical forest to the edge of the continent.
This is exactly the route of the Sintra · Cascais · Estoril tour.
Day 3 — Óbidos, Fátima and the monasteries
The final day is a journey through time across the country's centre. Begin in the medieval village of Óbidos, all walls and flowered streets, where you taste ginjinha in a little chocolate cup. Continue to the Sanctuary of Fátima, one of the world's great pilgrimage centres. On the way back, visit the Batalha and Alcobaça monasteries, Gothic UNESCO jewels, and if there's time, the fishing town of Nazaré.
Our Pilgrim Tour chains these stops into one well-organised day.
Tips to make the most of it
- Book Sintra's palace tickets in advance in summer.
- Always start early: the crowds arrive mid-morning.
- Comfortable shoes and an extra layer — the hills and coast are cooler.
- Pace your energy: day 2 is the most physical, with lots of climbing.
Why do it with a driver
